Record review: PoP Campaign – Britain Isn’t Working [CARP]

PoP Campaign’s second album in a year carries somewhat of a political punch, and although at times it’s difficult to follow the band’s commentary, due to a shortage of vocals, they clearly has something to say.

Opener ‘Maggie’s Farm’ is a hopeful bouncy synth number sandwiched between soundbites from Maggie Thatcher that give off the same vibe, immediately you’re hit with a false sense of security.

This is surely performed with the tongue firmly in the cheek, positivity towards Thatcher just doesn’t come from a Glasgow spawned band and a quick glance at the record title, Britain Isn’t Working, and the track listing deems this a safe assumption.

‘ASBOlutely Filthy’ gives an urgent sense of panic with harsh synth tones combining to quickly contrast the upbeat nature of the opener.

‘Britain Isn’t Working’ uses similar harsh tones creating a baron feeling while Exclamation Mark drawls messages about unemployment and failing schools.

‘Laptop Loyal’ starts a dance floor teasing, finger pointing joy before going suddenly sombre and build up to soaring synths and bleeping synth that’d easily fill a dance floor.

The upbeat electro vibes continues while still toying with harsh tones, and the fun Sonic boss-esque ‘Welcome To Home, Kevin Keegan’ gives a nice feeling of reminiscence and closing statement ‘Farewell You Old Queen (I Won’t Cry At Your Funeral)’ is a head nodding, almost calming end to a quite exhilarating half hour listen.
