It’s those kind of ‘in-between’ tours that have become a favourite of mine – the shows a band does when they’ve completed touring their latest album and want to road test some songs they’ve been writing for their next.
There is just a certain kind of magic to them which is exemplified at Superfood’s show at Tut’s tonight.
This gig brings their closer followers out for a rare chance to hear a few songs before they reach the studio.
Despite frontman, Dom Ganderton, telling us the songs were written in a flat, they sound like they were written in a field of flowers.
Those who enjoyed their 2014 debut Don’t Say That will love the new material, which continues on their formula of sunny sing-along tunes.
The crowd, who can barely keep still during the set, are certainly into them; whooping and cheering their appreciation to the band after each song.
The set isn’t all new material though, a selection of the biggest hits from Don’t Say That are also played.
Songs like ‘Right On Satellite’ and ‘Mood Bomb’ have the more energetic members of the audience throwing themselves into each other in excited ecstasy as soon as the beat kicks in.
Fan favourite single ‘Superfood’ had the crowd hooting the band’s name back to them like a catchphrase.
It is a fun atmosphere where your worries are left at the door – even the usual arm folders have their hips moving to Superfood’s unique brand of sunshine.
The set flows in in a blur of dance moves and sing-alongs and leaves the venue to go out into the cold and soggy streets had definitely has me bittersweet.
Roll on album two…
