Fiona Soe Paing’s single ‘Heartbeat’ carries on the dark, dirty downtempo sound that was found on her previous EP, Tower of Babel, and is tighter, maybe even creepier, but certainly less delirious sounding.
Despite being not quite as experimental as some of her previous work (seriously, the ‘Tower of Babel’ is one of the most unexpectedly jaw dropping tracks of the last few years), ‘Heartbeat’ is no slouch, grooving along at about 90 beats per minute, with a melodic bass and slow train percussion, the chorus catches you and sticks in your mind, “you’re my heartbeat” she howls high, “you’re my only one” she growls low.
The build of the track is well paced, and oddly is sort of reminiscent of Kylie’s ‘Slow’, and by the time the lead synth comes in for the final build and fade, you’ve found yourself pulled along, not quite sure where the three and a half minutes have gone.
Alien Lullabies is the name of the forthcoming album, and you can see why.
