Scatabrainz – It’s So Beautiful Out Here [Southside Deluxe]

Scatabrainz, a producer who has previously worked with Loki and Skribbo, releases his EP It’s So Beautiful Out Here and continues with the experimental and often downtempo hip-hop he’s become known for.

Introducing the album with breathy strings, it finds its feet with ‘Don’t You Ever’, sparse beats and rounded sounds for last train home, while pitched up and down vocals, reminiscent of Burial, converse with each other.

‘Show Me The Real You’ continues the theme, chopped up and pitched vocals dreamily drift over a rounded bass and ringing snare, possibly taking influence from the likes of King Cannibal or Kode 9.

‘Real Love’ is more of the same, letting the listener fill in the massive spaces between the notes for themselves, and ‘Till It’s Gone’ adds a lazy, phased, spaced out synth to the mix, whereas ‘Surrounded’ fills the space a little more, and nods its head to DJ Shadow.

The EP ends with ‘Counting Just The Stars’, an appropriate name for such ambience, making the listener picture lying on the roof of their car, after a night out, staring at the sky, while delicate synths, rounded kicks and bass and ringing snares shuffle on underneath.
