On ‘Escape’, Kami-O utilises his fine production skills to construct a piece of electronic music rich in both texture and atmosphere, with its meticulous sounds more in tune with that of film scores as opposed to floor-filling dance beats.
The track builds from the ground up with percussive cracks, which slowly augment and contrast each other, suggesting an air of menace within this particular musical landscape.
A brief moment of calm allows both the music and listener some breathing space, however the stillness lasts a mere second before the senses are flooded with waves of sound that come one after the next, the track growing ever denser and expressive with each new motif introduced.
This is music designed to evoke images and engage the imagination, which it does so without succumbing to the usual pitfalls of most electronic and dance music; there is no prolonged build up before the massive beat drops, no overwrought histrionics.
A fine rendering of an individual artistic vision, hopefully Kami-O will be sound-tracking a dystopian cityscape near you soon.
