Despite the metal-band name, Kick to Kill are as far from the genre as you can get, with new single ‘Dreams’ offering up a slick synth-laden indie track with a slow, pulsing disco beat and plenty of wet, chorus and reverb-drenched guitars, reminiscent of new romantic revivalists like The Bravery that popped up in the mid noughties.
Previous comparisons to Joy Division are apt when describing David Cook’s low, spacious vocals but the music is much more New Order – with the electric, canned snare drum sound particularly harking back to 80s pop.
‘Dreams’ isn’t as heavy as previous singles ‘Black Kisses’ and ‘Avalanche’ but is lean and tightly crafted, following the Dave Grohl slogan: “don’t bore us, get to the chorus”.
Following the explosion of Future Islands into the mainstream after their notorious and strangely addictive Letterman performance went viral, now is the perfect time for Kick to Kill’s brand of dark disco magic.
With a host of impressive support slots under their belt, including opening for The Fall and The Damned, it looks like the only way for the Glasgow four-piece is up.
