Record review: Suspire – ‘Dodos/Lickspittle’

Suspire_Dodos1

To suspire (verb) is to sigh, or groan – neither are suitable responses to Suspire (noun).

Described as ‘jagged pop’, the Glaswegian three-piece have been nipping at the heels of the big boys of the Scottish independent music for a while in their self admitted bid for world domination, which will cultivate in a debut album release this year.

In this latest release we see two sides of the band, on ‘Dodos’ there is the characteristic ‘jagged pop’ though with a slight rounding off around the edges.

‘Dodos’ is boastful of this bands intentions, seasoned with dashes of experimentation in just the right places with the appropriate quantity to keep its pop and rock fundamentals intact.

‘LickSpittle’ is a classic b-side, the sort that has been lost in the digital age.

A lickspittle is, by definition, ‘a person who behaves obsequiously to those in authority’, so the fact that the track is an attempt at a ballad by the band is a nice touch of irony as the vocals are as sweet as you could possibly want while they’re poured over a hypnotising metronomic beat.

Suspire hope to release their debut album this year, this little preview is bound to have fans and newcomers to the band fidgeting with anticipation.
