Record review: Letters – Old Motion Pictures

Edinburgh-based five-piece Letters have been creating quite a buzz on the Scottish music scene recently.

Their hotly anticipated debut EP Older Motion Pictures showcases the band’s strongest and most well rounded tracks to date.

People seem to make a huge deal about that fact their music is underpinned by these ‘dark cello sounds’, but the cello involvement is so thought out and woven into the fabric of each and every track, that you hardly even notice it’s there.

It simply provides this haunting and emotive tone throughout the record, that makes Letters so unique.

Opener ‘Explosions’ is an instrumental, rock monstrosity that is confident, ballsy and stands-alone without the need for any lyrics.

The title track is a powerful and assured piece that possesses the power to move the listener both instrumentally and emotionally.

This confidence is continued with ‘Torren’, but this time the vocals are softer, lighter and somewhat cheerier.

The cello on the poppy ‘From Time to Time’, with its whimsical and flirty rift, stands out a little more, but it’s absolutely glorious.

It fits perfectly with the entire track, creating just the right amount of drama needed to confirm all the hype surrounding Letters has been correct.
