‘Record review’: Holy Mountain – Earth Measures

Holy Mountain are old, and their music is old.

With all those old trademarks of rock musicians, if you live in Glasgow you will have seen them gigging or acting like they make a living by playing stadiums.

Walking in and out of bars like they own the place and giving one-word answers like “tone” and “bitch” when anyone approaches them.

The vests on the cover is good I admit that.

Shame we can’t just judge the album by the cover – I’ve had to listen to it.

The album sounds really below par on my laptop speakers which just goes to show how little they know about the recording process that they cannot make it sound professional on a computer, the press release I see everywhere states “recorded in 16-17 hours” clearly 10 hours was them arguing over the size of the bread for the sandwiches or getting lost in the building.

The actually playing on it ranges from good, I mean Idlewild good, to snot tribute band level.

This is most apparent when focusing in on the drums, it feel like I’m listening to the drummer from bio-hazard try to relearn kit after a car crash.

Rumour has it Iain Stewart of the Phantom Band was brought in by Chemikal Underground to rerecord all the drum parts – hence the delay for the LP’s release.

The album goes on and on with that ‘power chord’ sound that however I feel they haven’t used the singer as much, I saw them at the 13th Note and they had an angry singer 4th person.

These loud bands are all the same.

The three piece Holy Mountain, all 70s arseholes.

Rating 70/1970

  1. You’re not wrong. All bands are arseholes, I mean The Beatles; Led Zeppelin; The Sex Pistols; Jay-Z; Kraftwerk; even that there Ludwig van Beethoven; they all sound rubbish coming out of the tinny sound mufflers that pass for speakers on my laptop too. They obviously know nothing about the recording process whatsoever (especially that Beethoven bloke), not being able to make their tunes sound like they’re being played on a mega bucks hi-fi system when in fact they’re being played on a piece of shit portable word processor. I mean, who do these people think they are? Thank God for visionaries like you to keep it real.
