The latest project from multi-instrumentalist Martin Johnston, American Clay release new single ‘Flow’ ahead of the forthcoming Sky Hooks EP, due in late March.
One of the first releases from the new label venture of LP Records, Johnston makes the move from behind the drumkit to front one of the most exciting bands in Scotland at present.
In the space of less than four minutes, ‘Flow’ drifts its way through a myriad of different genres.
Initially starting off with a shoegaze vibe, it then thrashes into full-on noise rock with Johnston’s impassioned vocal screaming for dear life, before reaching its crescendo, and mellowing back out with some Mogwai-esque post-rock to finish.
In theory, the track should sound like an absolute clusterfuck, however the reality is a far different matter.
As Johnston plays every instrument on the recorded output of American Clay, it enables him to present his art exactly how it was intended.
A terrific showcase of an extremely talented individual.
EP out on Friday March 24 via LP Records with launch gig at Oran Mor on March 23
