Tacocat at Broadcast, 4/5/16

Arriving at Broadcast slightly late and I sadly miss tonight’s local supports Breakfast Muff and Youngstrr Joey, but the crowd’s high sprits are enough proof that the duo performed to their usual excellent standard, which I have been lucky enough to have witnessed on a number of previous occasions.

Tonight’s headliners are Seattle pop punk quartet Tacocat, whose live show is bound to address a number of feminist themes combined with all the wit, charm and sarcasm you could possibly want.

Opening their set with obvious crowd-pleaser ‘Bridge to Hawaii’, it doesn’t take the four-piece long to get the crowd moving as they bounce around the stage in bright clashing patterns with their candy floss coloured hair.

Frontwoman Emily Nokes is especially lively as she dances around the stage with a tambourine in hand, coming scarily close to banging her head on the venue’s low ceiling, however she doesn’t seem to care as she introduces tonight’s first song about periods ‘FDP’ or First Day Period.

Carrying on with tracks from the band’s latest album, Lost Time, Tacocat cover a number of subjects including the X-Files’ own Dana Scully and bassist, Bree Mckenna’s love of horses.

Tacocat’s music is extremely relatable, proven as ‘You Can’t Fire Me, I Quit’ is introduced by by my flatmate stating to me: “this song is about you and your life”.

The band’s banter is as entertaining as their tunes as they continually make both their fellow members and the crowd laugh, as Nokes introducing songs with lines such as “this song is about trolls on the internet and trying to just be a girl on the internet” only for guitarist Eric Randall to chime in “good luck!”

Tonight’s highlights comes in the form of second period related track ‘Crimson Wave’ and ‘I Hate The Weekend’, it is during these final tracks that the band’s energy really kicks in through their fuzzy riffs and furious, screaming verses, which truly showcase Nokes vocal strength.

Tacocat are one of those bands’s whose live show not only makes you want to see it all over  again but will make you consider starting your own grrrl band.
