Yakima – ‘Burn’

Yakima, formerly known as Franklin, have moved on to country infused indie with ‘Burn’, from their new self-titled EP.

It starts out with a catchy lead guitar riff that feels plaintive and, if the image of a desert-like airport on the album artwork is anything to go by, a bit like that person on the beach who was more fun to look at than to talk to.

There is an overall feeling of depression, loss and a bit of nostalgia; the vocals kick in and we hear that “it takes too long to care” – a very grunge statement that, you’re in for a treat if you like emotional distance and failure (don’t we all).

This isn’t to say Yakima don’t know what they’re crafting, it’s very insightful – there are a few nice and playful country licks and the second verse is orchestrated delicately adding depth to the quality lyrics.

The chorus’ are also strong and the doomy reverb on the descending scale gives you something to bite into – cutting the bitter with the sweet.

Yakima have done well in tapping the well of country heartbreak songs with ‘Burn’.
