Dundee two piece Wotjek deliver their second long player like a gentle paean to some distant remembered bucolic landscape; all cascading guitars and ticklish melodies.
Whilst they definitely plough the post rock furrow, what they don’t really do is let fly in the manner of Mogwai say; whilst many songs here begin in the same way they tend to stay within the tuneful sphere rather than crashing on into white noise type mayhem come the end, lively though they are.
Instrumental as tends to be the way with these things it’s all thoroughly agreeable and considered; very hard to find fault though none of it rams itself boldly above the parapet and screams, “I’m original me. You ain’t heard shit like this before”.
It’s good though and has enough about it to keep it fresh; including almost jazz like structures and particularly percussion at points.
One of the tags on the Bandcamp version is “Math”, which sounds particularly alarming; algebra not conjurring up raucous times a go go.
Perhaps it is because because it is so precise in its execution; we’ll go with that and the more descriptive “ethereal” tag slapped on its ass as well.
Still, it’s a very very decent effort, with definitely the talent there to take it further; time to approach that high wire act of apparent chaos while still being artfully and accurately constructed; that way promise and transcendence lies.
