With a click of the fingers and sparse percussion things get under way in this agreeably pared back release: the barest number of elements looped on the fly, giving a thoroughly rewarding, if perhaps a little earnest, experience.
Betraying a classical background – though she has worked with Mogwai on the ‘Young Team’ album at the age of thirteen [her, not them] – it’s artfully arranged in it’s deceptively simple production.
Waterfall keyboards, an electronic xylophone-sounding thing and that insistent rhythm along with Brown’s wistful, multi-tracked vocal producing a sumptuous though minimal whole.
This is part four of the Ten in Ten project: ten songs released over ten months on the tenth of every month; does what it says on the tin, can’t argue with that.
Other songs in the project feature her weapon of choice, the flute, married to modern ambient and percussion production: fear not though, this is no flawed Celtic fusion tomfoolery; they work.
Definitely worth following this series via her website and ‘Silence So Loud’ is perhaps better viewed as part of the series than as a stand alone single in its own right.
Impressive and intriguing.
