‘The Loneliness of the Lightspeed Astronaut’, from Fife band Eastcoastdefector, aspires to sci-fi alternative music with an easy-going riff and audio clips of countdowns in space, which merges the title with the effect.
It begins with the audio clip of being projected into space, while the drums kick in momentarily with a steady bassline leading to the tinny sound of the guitar and the build up of its foundation.
Alan Clarke’s vocals come in distorted, as if he is singing from space, giving a different mood and combined with the simplistic style of the track, compliments Clarke’s vocal style.
The chorus is catchy and delivers a break from the sci-fi atmosphere of the song with the lyrics, “all I want is to see you, all I want is to be with you”.
With ‘The Loneliness of the Lightspeed Astronaut’, Eastcoastdefector delivers a space-rock atmosphere and leans on the simplistic style and distorted vocals to give it its edge, and captures it entirely.
