All The Queens Bovine – ‘Fish Tank’

All The Queens Bovine give up a four track EP featuring some monster, butt-whacking grooves mixed with glitchy beats and ever so on point, analogue synth sounds.

The highlight opener ‘Stumble Break’, comes at you with a firm 4/4 beat, a warbling chanteuse, chucks in some off-kilter percussion and then some killer slap bass and scratchy guitar, sounding very much as if it’s been lifted from two different Sister Sledge efforts; supremely danceable and seductive.

‘Glue’ also packs its passport for a trip to the 70s to lift the vocal hook from Earth, Wind and Fire, ‘September’.

The “do you remember?” refrain shackled to some pleasingly, squelchy quacks, rattles and whistles with the odd, Justice-style, growl lobbed in.

A little disjointed in parts – one does yearn for it to let go and indulge its dancefloor desires from time to time; not quite the same gyrating glee as the opener but a squeaky romp nonetheless.

‘Daytime’ gives us a sultry female vocal, slap-happy drums and more modern, hip-swaying, funk bassline.

Slide in an ambient breakdown before crashing back into life with that groove again and jobs a good ‘un; an ever present over this EP – taking out all the bells and whistles, the wriggling drive is a delight.

There’s some dancefloor devastation contained right across this entire offering; some extended mixes to keep things rattling along would be welcome.

Closer, ‘Knightrider (Bovine Edit)’, is exactly that; a reworking of the theme tune from the, Kit car featuring, 80s series.

Added weight, but perilously close to an end of night, student disco, froth-along; shame, as without the association with that piece of television it’s actually a decent bit of music with John Carpenter-esque atmospherics and Italo leanings; perhaps one for those who’ve never seen the programme; or a mullet.
