The Indos – Fifty Shades of Blue [Twin City]

Edinburgh’s The Indos new EP, Fifty Shades of Blue, includes four tracks, each with their own way of introducing the style that the band is heading in, both musically and lyrically.

Opener, ‘Falling In and Out of Space’ has a raw, bass heavy sound with a hauntingly repetitive riff, the lyrics are open and personal as vocalist Michael Knowles sings about being stuck in a dull daily routine: “I don’t think that I’ll be in today/because I’ve packed my bags and I’m running away”.

‘3 Sticks of Dynamite’ is similar, it also includes an eerie guitar riff that appears several times throughout the track, Knowles also maintains the relatively depressing theme within the lyrics of being bored with life, however this is complemented by the gritty music.

The final two tracks change focus lyrically, however carry on a similar style musically to what has been previously heard, ‘She Drives My Gun Insane’ draws from the typical indie rock sounds of likes of Kings of Leon and The Killers, while closer ‘Lovin’ You Was Easy’ includes a riff very like The Kinks ‘You Really Got Me’ as Knowles describes the memory of a past relationship.

Fifty Shades of Blue showcases The Indos ability to write interesting songs and provides a great introduction to what could possibly be an exciting album in the future.
