Whether it’s Jimmy Page tipping his hat at Taurus, Noel Gallagher nodding his barnet at T. Rex or Dave Grohl fist-bumping Dio, great music requires great inspiration and ‘Make You Mine’, the latest offering from Glasgow’s Jim Valentine is no exception.
With enough nods to Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and Oasis to give even the most die-hard of long-haired, metal-loving, head-bangers a sore head, ‘Make You Mine’ is best described as amalgamation of mid-nineties to mid-two-thousands rock.
The heavy, bass driven swagger and snarling vocals make for a juggernaut song that wouldn’t feel out of place as the soundtrack to a barroom brawl.
In spite of this, ‘Make You Mine’ is a surprisingly melodic, with layered guitar parts giving a fuller feel to the track, accompanying vocals, which are likely to divide opinion.
Distinctly nasal, the roaring whine of the lead vocals don’t feel out of place here, but take some getting used to.
With songs of this calibre, however, it will take a great deal to halt Jim Valentine’s progress.
