Ayrshire rockers Vukovi are a fierce four-piece, who’ve been around for a couple of years but after successful appearances at Radio 1’s Academy in the spring they’re certainly playing on a bigger playing filed than ever before.
In the past with Vukovi there has always been a suspicion that their energetic live shows ran ahead of their songwriting.
Difficult math rock time signatures in the style of Rolo Tomassi were a boon to hardcore fans but a presented a headache to listeners, while their less bonkers tracks tended to lag behind those of their more melodic peers.
All this may change with ‘So Long Gone’, a rock radio ready anthem that manages to strike a good balance between the energy and aggression of their early music and a punchy chorus reminiscent of Foo Fighters.
After an unfortunate mix-up with a venue owner, the video for the song was filmed in the legendary Barrowland Ballroom, and some of that magic seems to rubbed off on the band.
Lead singer Janine Shilstone’s vocals are clear and loud and with bands like Marmozets and Lonely the Brave picking up mainstream radio play, 2014 might just be Vukovi’s year.
