The Third Day is the third album from Scottish electronic post rock collective, North Atlantic Oscillation, following up from 2012’s acclaimed Fog Electric, an album which saw them take to the road on a highly successful headline tour, as well as supporting alt-rock legend Bob Mould.
This album brings to mind the sound of bands like Mogwai, with the mix of programmed and acoustic drums and an effects heavy vocal style, Radiohead, with its musical rhythmic complexity, and My Bloody Valentine, with the driving atmospheric lead parts, creating the perfect blend of post-rock, alt-rock and shoegaze indie.
The group jump between ambient electronic styles and huge sounding post rock songs flawlessly throughout the album. stand out tracks include ‘August’, with its catchy lead parts, driving drum beat and atmospheric vocals.
While there is also the dreamy instrumental ‘Penrose’ and the soothing dream-pop climax that is ‘When To Stop’, which brings to mind bands like Death Cab For Cutie.
North Atlantic Oscillation provide a real treat on The Third Day with a great complex stylistic mix for fans of many musical tastes.
