The East End Social Celebrates Glasgow’s Extraordinary Musical Heritage with “Glasgow Mix Tape”

On August 2nd one of Glasgow’s most influential record labels Chemikal Underground celebrates the city’s ongoing love affair with music by bringing together a diverse array of independenly-minded musicians and mavericks.

A continuation of their Culture 2014 project ‘The East End Social’, Chemikal’s programme on the Green is part of Festival 2014 and highlights Glasgow’s peerless reputation for cutting edge contemporary music whilst acknowledging the trailblazers from the city’s past who have inspired generations of music fans throughout the 80s, 90s and 00s.

With a lineup of eye-popping diversity that straddles The Playhouse speigeltent and The Living Room main stage, there will be something for music fans young and old including Dixieland jazz from King Tut’s residents The Penman Jazzmen, a set from Scotland’s legendary crooner Sydney Devine (who will be followed on the main stage by Glasgow’s thunderous rock trio Holy Mountain), performances from Lloyd Cole & The Leopards, Admiral Fallow, The Bluebells, The Phantom Band, Errors and Malcolm Middleton.

Also appearing will be emerging acts such as Ubre Blanca and Alarm Bells, folk ensemble Trembling Bells and the prolific musical outrider Richard Youngs.

You’ll also be able to catch sets from bis – the band that kickstarted Chemikal Underground with their TOTP appearance with ‘Kandy Pop’ in 1996 – Glasgow’s extraordinary ska- troupe The Amphetameanies and a rare acoustic performance from ex-Orange Juice legend Edwyn Collins.

The day will be compered by Vic Galloway and Nicola Meighan with DJ duties being assumed by Stephen Pastel, Adele Bethel (Sons & Daughters) and Helen Marnie (Marnie/Ladytron).

Starting from 10.30am the event will continue until 9.30pm in the evening with music videos from Glasgow acts past and present nestled in between live performances.

Entrance to Glasgow Green is free and un-ticketed.
