Where’s George? is a hotly tipped trio of Borders rockers and after a few high profile slots their curious moniker has found itself on a lot of people’s lips.
Smartly produced to take advantage of the two distinctive vocal styles of Amelia Stokes and Penny Osborne, Underground clocks in at a solid five tracks, showcasing the young trio’s talented songwriting.
The chord structures are quite conventional but the trio enliven proceedings with a series of vocal tracks that play to the group’s strengths; streaming and writhing over one another or meeting in surprising and inventive harmonies.
‘The Big Life’ offers roughly strummed guitars, while ‘See You’ fades in with sweet “ooohs” and a feisty invocation “it’s a long way to the top if you want to play with the big boys” as catchy guitars mimic the vocal line.
‘Keep the Pace’ once more shows off the two vocalists knack for winning harmonies but the trio save the best for last with ‘Some Like it Live’, which unspools over bouncy verse guitar before exploding with a snarl “it’s not what you thought” to deliver the best chorus of the record.
