Record Review: King Eider – ‘Drink Me Dry’

a3246781018_10Although King Eider may currently be relatively little known, the release of their debut single ‘Drink Me Dry’ is surely set to gain the Edinburgh based five -piece the recognition that they deserve.

In recent years the face of folk has changed dramatically, and in a similar vein to artists such as Mumford and Sons, Ben Howard and Fleet Foxes, King Eider specialise in making music that presents a fresh take on the genre.

Listening to ‘Drink Me Dry’ gives you the distinct feeling that this is the beginning of something brilliant.

There is very little not to like with regards to ‘Drink Me Dry’.

The song is a perfect combination of beautiful harmonies, skilful musicianship and an infectious tune that will linger in your head for days.

From the constant unexpected changes in dynamics to the dark original lyrics which eloquently depict the pain of losing love, the song is surprising in its entirety.

All the essential elements of folk are present, yet at the same time the band still manage to create something that sounds uniquely theirs.

So far the record has been extremely well received; even scoring a slot on the Best of British unsigned music radio station.

The band are continuing to gig around the country, and are recording an album in September to be released soon after, which should be a treat if this single is anything to go by.

King Eider is a band that folk fans should be very excited about.
