Record Review: Cafe Disco – What Do You Love/You

a2781332564_10And I’m in a Ben Elton romcom… Am I complaining though? No, is the honest answer to that.

It is evident from the start of Cafe Disco’s EP, What Do You Love/You, that they are upbeat and poppy, which has the massive potential to either crash and burn or fly sky high.

This band is soaring.

From the get go the bouncing, harmonising, cheery guitar riffage that introduces us to first track, ‘What Do You Love?’ evidently shows that this band know how to pen a first class feel good anthem.

With the coupling of both upbeat music, with that four on the floor beat that makes you strut down the street, and hopeful lyrics like: “and don’t tell yourself you’ll do it one day/or you’ll find yourself old and grey”, you know you can conquer the world with this ringing in your ear.

However, you’re not the only one who will, as with tracks like this Cafe Disco have what seems like a bright future ahead of them.

With the gentle ringing of a reverberating piano, you expect the second, ‘You’, to be calming.

You’re assumption is wrong.

In fact this track is the edgiest of the two, with a math rock inspired intro that gravitates to a Biffy Clyro-esque crescendo, you are enlivened and feel confident.

However, the track then calms back down and sets off on what feels like a late springtime stroll with the woman you love.

In fact, ‘You’, a love song, with lyrics like: “you, are the first one I want to see,” recalls good memories with that special someone and that feeling you have after leaving work, that all you want to do is go home to them and fall asleep in one another’s arms…

Wait? Am I in another romcom? Yes I am, and I couldn’t be happier.

Cafe Disco clearly have a bright future, as bright as their song’s subject matter it would seem, and with a good following here in Glasgow, who knows what awaits?

One thing is for sure, the major key songs, with delicate structures that show they are damn good musicians, mean only one thing; I cannot wait to see where they go.

I mean, who doesn’t like happy music when the time is right!?
