After being absent from the live scene for almost a year, Irvine-based Culann have a lot to prove.
Two songs into the half-hour set, lead singer/guitarist PJ Kelly, for lack of a better phrase, totally fucked his guitar strap; grade A for determination.
Having spent some time away at Watercolour studio, tonight’s show was an opportunity to showcase what Culann’s future has in store; their debut album is due for release later in 2012.
If all of the songs on their debut full-length are as strong as their performance tonight, the future looks very bright indeed for the band.
Culann’s strongest assest is their refusal to fit in to any genre, which at one time could be seen as a bad thing, but with bands like The Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria achieving both commercial and critical success, 2012 is an ideal time for bands who refuse to stick to conventional song structures.
It means that when you think you know what’s coming next, a jarring chord or a time signature change catches you off-guard before the band segues into folk-inspired riffery or a reggae-like rhythm.
‘Beat Your Chest’ is an already established fan favourite, with its catchy piano-led melody and its memorable line the track is named after.
New track ‘Salvation’ further shows off Ross McCluskie’s command of the keys, which is something Culann do very well – highlight the strengths of each member.
Calum Davis’ basslines run rampant around guitar structures provided by Kelly and fellow guitarist Greg Irish.
Drummer Sean Kelly refuses to settle for stock rhythms and keeps listeners, and fellow band members, on their toes at all times.
Prog-rock they may be, but with a much more accessible attitude, one which won over tonight’s crowd and many they have played before.
PJ’s vocals sound stronger and more confident than ever, and the band themselves play tighter and are writing better, Culann’s future on the Scottish scene is one to watch.
Just don’t disappear for a year again, guys.
