Record review: Mother Ganga – Pineal Soup

Pineal Soup from Mother Ganga is a delectable dish made up of food groups from around the world.

The main course is undoubtedly an ambient affair with its thick, luscious tones – but there are strands of other flavors thrown into the mix that cut through ever so slightly.

Titles like ‘Ganges Riverboat’ and ‘Trip To Samye Ling’ hint at some of the exotic, Eastern influences, yet there’s always the feeling that each song is like a day trip, where no matter where we are led, we always eventually return home to familiar roots.

Western influences of LCD Soundystem, MGMT, Boards Of Canada and Sigur Ros all seem to seep into the music in places, creating a EP that seamlessly blends the East with the West.

As with any release, they’ll be tracks that are stronger than others – but with ambient music I believe that it’s a slightly different setup.

The tracks must work alongside one another and help define the flow and feeling and cohesion of the whole.

In that regard, Mother Ganga do brilliantly.
