The Halloween gig at Pivo Pivo – three metal bands, some Burlesque girls and a bar that offers the widest range of beers in Glasgow for £3 at the door; not too shabby.
The Burlesque girls are good, a nice little between band thing I could get used to – but onto the bands.
Momentus are the first band on and made a good account of themselves.
Tuneful, melodic metal let down by their song writing talents.
Covers of Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘A Little Piece Of Heaven’ and Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ show ability, range and humour that their own songs don’t.
Awkwardly, their own material feels more limited, too comfortable – it doesn’t feel like they are playing on the edge of their abilities or pushing themselves.
There is no excitement, despite their own compositions being pleasing enough.
To their credit, lovely guys, singer ia dressed as Britney herself and incorporated some costume changes into the performance.
To me, a band with bags and bags of potential.
Bloodlunch, on the other hand, are muddy, lack any sort of definition, was heavy for the sake of being heavy, and was loud on the brink of being painful.
On the bright side their front man is definite front man material – loud, in your face and not afraid of being the centre of attention; just the sort of guy I’d cross the road to avoid.
Last band on, are Citizens, who bring that mixture of confidence in their material, and ability that had been missing all night.
Assured performances of strong arrangements with some crowd banter – there is no mistaking who was top of the bill tonight.
By this point, the room is full and the general atmosphere left in the wake of Bloodlunch had lifted.
Pivo Pivo almost becomes a mosh pit at this stage, the band could’ve been drinking since they arrived hours ago and were letting it all out on stage.
They had no insecurities, and so no-one in the audience felt that they had any.
The two factions were feeding off of one another.
Getting the train home I ran the night through my mind – I have to get into Citizens, watch out for Momentus and red flag Bloodlunch.
Oh and Burlesque! I must get the girlfriend into Burlesque….
