Live review: Cities and Skylines EP launch at King Tut’s, 5/10/11

As Cities and Skylines take to the stage, lead singer David Napier calls people forward from all corners of the venue, not content until that close-knit, small venue atmosphere is created. Not that it’s quiet – there’s a healthy crowd in attendance this evening – it’s just that they’re confident of putting on a good show and want everyone present to witness it.

They certainly don’t disappoint in this respect, as they work their way through an accomplished set reminiscent of Twin Atlantic, LightGuides and other more-rock-than-pop acts of that ilk. Napier’s prominent tattoo of what is later confirmed to be a silhouette of Freddie Mercury draws the eye – an unsurprising role model given his stage presence. An imposing figure, he seeks eye contact from the crowd at every opportunity and clearly enjoys being centre of attention.

The rest of the band look assured as they work their way solidly through the set. There could be an effort to shorten the gaps between songs, and occasionally the vocals don’t quite cut through the mix, but overall the band produce a very impressive performance.

With this being Cities and Skylines first visit to King Tut’s (supporting Young Legionnaires no less), they spoke of how happy they were to be there – on this form they will certainly be invited back.
