Live review: Male Pattern Band supporting Vivian Girls at The Captain’s Rest, 18/7/11

As Male Pattern Band emerge from the rear of basement setting, the venue is not quite full to its sweaty capacity but there is still a good turn out and the band seem grateful. Following a brief greeting, the band confidently open with a melodic instrumental that makes heads turn and ears prick up throughout the crowd.

However, when the vocals finally start, disappointment sets in as something is clearly not right with lead singer Chris McRory’s voice. Eventually, after straining his way through new songs ‘Wilt’ and ‘Cable and Cloth’ he confesses that he has a cold and makes his apologies.

This minor imperfection can be overlooked as the band performs their awkwardly warm garage pop as a tight-knit musical unit with impressive precision. They are certainly a band sure of themselves on stage and by the time they finish their brief set, they have certainly gained more than a few new fans.
